has revealed that
GTA Online
will be getting a “big” update later this year, and fans think that it’s the perfect time for Michael de Santa to return.
One of the most exciting parts of seeing GTA Online evolve over the last decade (holy crap we’re getting old) is how it’s implemented certain characters from the single-player portion of the game. At first, it was just smaller characters like Lester and Simeon but we eventually got to work alongside two GTA legends –
Trevor and Frankin

As great as it was to get more time with two-thirds of
GTA 5
‘s protagonists, there’s one big character who has been completely missing in action since GTA Online launched – Michael de Santa. As arguably the main character of
Grand Theft Auto
5’s story and one who has an open future at the end of the game, it’s very strange that we haven’t seen or heard anything from him in GTA Online.
Some fans think that’s all about to change, though. Yesterday,
Rockstar posted a news update on its official website and revealed that there’s a “big” update planned
for GTA Online in the Summer. It didn’t go as far as saying anything about the update (beyond revealing that a new bonus super car is coming), but it does seem like it’s going to be more substantial than usual.
Whenever Rockstar Games announces that GTA Online is going to be getting a big update, everyone starts getting excited about the potential return of Michael. Over on Twitter,
many of the posts reacting to the news are fans asking about Michael
and speculating that he’ll somehow be a part of what’s coming.
In fairness, that theory is one that’s been going for years and somehow never come true, but it does seem a little different this time. We’re not too far away from the release of GTA 6, so this big update for GTA Online could be one of the last chances we have for Michael to make a return in GTA 5’s lifetime. Rockstar is surely aware of this, which does lend some evidence to it finally happening.
Although we don’t have Michael de Santa in GTA Online yet and might not even see him for the “big” update, we do at least get some missions from his son, Jimmy.
It seems that Michael de Santa’s actor, Ned Luke, is well up for making a return for GTA Online, too.
In response to the announcement of the update
, Ned Luke tweeted, “Wouldn’t that be nice”, seemingly showing some support for the idea. Whether that’s enough to make it come to pass is something we’ll have to wait until this Summer to find out.
